Ceviche

(use all ingredients 'to taste')
2 lbs fish such as cod, tilapia, salmon, Chilean sea bass or other meaty white fish.
1 or 2 purple onion
1 green pepper
Many many key limes, I used 1 and 1/2 bags...almost 1 lb
In blender:
place lime juice
sea salt
1 serrano type pepper
some celery leaves (fresh)
piece of ginger
sea salt

Chop the fish to about 1/2" pieces. Anything smaller than that and it will somewhat dissolve in the lime juice. Wash and drain the fish. Place in a long glass or ceramic dish and fully cover with key lime juice.
Marinate the fish in the lime juice for 30 minutes to 1 hour at room temperature if you're in a bit of a hurry, or for about 3 hours in the fridge if you are not.


The fish is done when the lime juice starts to turn milky in color and the fish is no longer transparent.
Serve with avocado or pebre.

Quick and easy Chili!

This is my variation of an easy chili recipe. Great taste with hardly any work!

1 lb ground turkey browned and drained (usually the turkey is very lean)
1 packet of chili seasoning mix.
1/2 tsp garlic powder (if you want)
add 1 can each: Red kidney beans, pinto beans, northern beans ( for color)I leave the juice instead of draining.
add 1 can of diced tomatoes (with juice)
Diced green bell pepper (I use about half, depends on how much you like
1 small chopped onion.
Let all ingredients simmer for 30-45 min.
Garnish with shredded cheese..

Dia de los Muertos Recipe!

Day of the Dead Bread:

- 1/2 cup of butter
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 tablespoon of anise seed
- 1 1/4 teaspoon of dry yeast
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 1/2 cup of water
- 4 eggs
- About 3 - 4 1/2 cups of flour
- 2 teaspoons orange zest
- 1/2 cup with sugar
- 1/4 cup orange juice
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 2 tablespoon white sugar

1. Heat the milk and the butter together in a medium saucepan, until the butter melts. Remove from the heat and add them warm water.
2. In a large bowl combine 1 cup of the flour, yeast, salt, anise seed and 1/4 cup of the sugar. Beat in the warm milk mixture then add the eggs and orange zest and beat until well combined. Stir in 1/2 cup of flour and continue adding more flour until the dough is soft.
3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size. This will take about 1 to 2 hours. Punch the dough down and shape it into a large round loaf with a round knob on top.
5. Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) oven for about 35 to 45 minutes. Remove from oven let cool slightly then brush with glaze.

To make glaze:

In a small saucepan combine the 1/4 cup sugar, orange juice and orange zest. Bring to a boil over medium heat and boil for 2 minutes. Brush over top of bread while still warm. Sprinkle glazed bread with white sugar.

A visit to Mt Rainer National Park!

I recently moved to Washington State, I was surprised with his beauty! Washington is beautiful and I enjoy living here. One of the best places to go is Mount Rainier National Park

Mount Rainier National Park was established on March 2, 1899, and encompasses 235,625 acres, ranging in elevation from 1,610' to 14,410' above sea level. The "mountain" is an active volcano encased in over 35 square miles of snow and ice, surrounded by old growth forest and stunning wildflower meadows. The park is also rich in cultural resources and was designated a National Historic Landmark District as an outstanding example of early park planning and rustic architecture.
If you're looking for scenic drives or challenging hikes, or to enjoy historic architecture or mountain climbing, Mount Rainier has something for you. The view is spectacular!

This is only one of the hundreds of places you can enjoy mother nature here!, I would recommend it for a family trip, very peaceful place on Earth!

A mother’s Love.

Happy Mother's Day a todas las madres de Spanglish Team!

A mother’s love is (most of the time) “unconditional… this is what makes it so very special. It is a love that will withstand transgressions of adolescence... plus whatever may come thereafter.

Hopefully everyone will be able to experience this kind of absolute unconditional love. It is the foundation of a healthy human being.

However, this is not always the case in real life- and it can prove to be difficult on Mother’s day to celebrate a relationship that has not been ideal.

From an early age, we know that when we do all the “right” things—when we are quiet, obedient, get good grades and otherwise “fit in” and are “good”—our parent will “love” us. However, when we misbehave or are “bad,” all those signs of “love” vanish. It is easy to learn from an early age that love is mostly conditional.

This is what makes a mother’s love so special; not many loves are as ideal as a mother’s love: and this is what we celebrate on Mother’s Day: the all consummate and unconditional love of a mother.

If you have not been blessed to experience that: know that you are worthy! You can hopefully have the opportunity to give this kind of love to your own children.

A mother's love is priceless. Our children should not have to earn our love. There is no love like a mother's love and there is no hurt like the hurt of a child, who is not loved unconditional by that very first and most important relationship: Mother.

In his book, Unconditional love, Dr. Powell writes that it is a permanent gift of the heart. He states: “this gift says simply: 'I want to share with you whatever I have that is good. Somewhere in the world there may be someone who is better for you or for me. That is not the point. The point is that I have chosen to give you my gift of love and you have chosen to love me. That is the only soil in which love can grow. We're going to make it together!”

As a mother, I know I love my son unconditionally. Forever. This unconditional love means that I cannot always predict my reaction or guarantee my strength, but I can guarantee that I am committed to his happiness, his growth. I will always accept him just as he is. I will always love him, deeply. My favorite book to read to him since he was a toddler has been “I love you Forever" I can still not read it without getting teary eyed. I mean every word of it!

Tip 1: Don’t leave a trail of plastics water bottles in your wake! Choose water bottles made from renewable resources or reusable materials, such as aluminum ***

Tip 2: Reuse
Carry a reusable bag with you for groceries, shopping, and take out food. But if you forget, choose paper and recycle it or plastic and reuse.

Tip 3: Recycle
Recycle whatever and wherever you can. The energy saved by using recycled instead of raw materials to manufacture goods ranges from 40 to 95 percent.

Tip 4: Save energy
Do not stop with changing your light bulbs! You can also set the refrigerator thermostat to maintain a temperature between 38 and 42 degrees.

Tip 5: Save energy
Start by turning off your screen saver and cut even more energy that your computer uses by putting it in sleep mode when it isn’t in use.

Tip 6: Switch it off
Plug electronic equipment into power strips that can be switched off at night or when not in use.

Tip 7: Buy toilet paper, paper towels and paper napkins that are made with post-consumer waste. Many brands are available in grocery stores, often at comparable prices.

TREASURY TUTORIAL!!!

How to design “the infamous” Treasury Step by Step without losing your cool!

Making a treasury is a lot of fun although it can be nerve-wracking at times! It is a competition of sorts, so you have to hone your skills.

Step 1: Go to the Poster Sketch. Here you will be able to prepare your treasury in advance so you are ready to go!.

As you enter the listing# and click OK the picture appears in the slot. You can arrange them later.

Step 2: Select a theme (like color, shape, series of items, numbers, occasion, or just go wild!) if you’re color blind please contact the nearest person to you☺

Tip: Have a blank document open (Stickies, Word etc.) Here you will write in advance the title of you Treasury, so that when the time comes you just copy and paste the name on the Treasury box that opens if you are lucky to get it! This is very important as you will not have time to hesitate or even type the name because you will very likely miss your chance. Treasuries fill in seconds!

Step 3: Once you fill all the slots Click the star at the bottom of the Poster Sketch, this way all your items will be saved.

Step 4: Open another window in your browser.

Step 5: Click the Treasury link on the Front Page


Step 6: Go to the bottom of your screen. Find the number of lists that are currently in the Treasury.

IF THAT NUMBER IS MORE THAN 333:
The Treasury is full and will not allow you to create a new list. You must wait for enough lists to expire so the number drops below 333.

Tip: You can sort the lists by "expiration" by clicking on the "expiration" tab, that will give you an idea when the lists will open again.

Step 7: When the list approaches 333 bring your coffee, tea or whatever because now it is a waiting game before that list is set to expire and wait for it. So sit there and be patient, don’t let your cat, dog, or hubby disturb you☺.

Tip: Remember to have the name of your treasury already copied and ready to paste!

Note: Please DO NOT refresh the screen.

Step 8: As soon as you see the box appear at the bottom of your screen, click inside so that you see your cursor blinking, paste your Title and hit Create. You now should have a list!.


Note: When you click Create, your page might blank out for a few seconds, don’t panic. When it returns you will be in your own empty treasury page.

Now you're ready to fill your list with your selected items, you can breathe and acknowledge your cat, dog or hubby .

Step 9: Copy and paste all the listing # that you previously filled in the Poster Sketch.

Step 10: When all your items are copied, add the subtitle and you have an option to insert your URL, blog or other location where it says chosen by xxx from…. (which helps to promote yourself!)

Step 11: Add your own comment as a curator at the bottom of the page.


TIPS to make Great treasuries:

• Select great pictures.
• Make them fun and unique and give them catchy or mysterious names.
• Do NOT include yourself in the treasury.
• After you finish the treasury, search in the Forum threads about treasury and promote your creation (your treasury).
• You may contact the artists that you’ve included, they will appreciate it.

We are growing!!

This is amazing! Spanglish is growing a little bit more by the day and we can see a great team is in the making.

I invite you all to see the great work that our new members are producing and share your thoughts with all of us. We have received many letters telling us how we are fulfilling a need that we all know we have, the importance of communicating with others who want to share common interests, ideas and hopes.

These are difficult times, I need not remind anyone of that, and usually the arts and crafts are sometimes considered non-essentials, we beg to differ! To nurture our spirit and our sensibility through the work of our own hands is not only a sure way to fend off any negative thoughts that might be floating around but also turns our feelings into something truly positive that help us in more ways than one.

One of those is surely economical, because no matter how much we love what we do, we need to help balance our budget, pay for materials etc. And that is also the objective of this group. Pulling our strengths together to make ourselves more visible in a crowded world. And, yes, the final and most important thing is that, if we really put our love and care in our work, this love will spread around to others, and that is what it is all about.

Like Charles Dickens once wrote: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; we were all going directly to Heaven, we were all going the other way."

We, as artists can choose to bring out the best, the wisdom, the belief and the light. This hope should be beaded and knit, carved and woven in our work to make it even more beautiful!

Etsy Spanglish!

Why this name for a team???

The idea came one day when I (Lolos) received an email from an Etsy user named Bululustudio. 

She said something was going on in the Virtual Labs, so I went there. We did not know each other so much, but after chatting for a while we decided to go into a private chat and started a really fun and good connection as if we knew each other for a long time, and ever since that day we took on the responsibility to create a great new team called Etsy Spanglish.

The name came after many hours of thinking and laughing (lol!) about silly names till I just said: "Spanglish!", porqué no? Sounds good, fun, divertido and the best part es que puedes hablar en both languages or mix them up as we usually do whether we want it or not. And so the name was born.

 

Now, what else do we need to be a really great team? People just like YOU, con energía, ideas, good attitude, good communication and sentido del humor!  We think that if we have the commitment to work together we will be able to find the solution to many problems that seem hard to solve on our own.

Our main objective is to have an active, participatory group, and through monthly chats, contests and other promotional events, obtain a positive result and success for our members. We will focus on Latin immigrants, Latin-American descendants and Spanish-speaking Americans interested in our culture and willing to share ideas, projects achieve common goals for the benefit of all.

Having said that, we think the most important thing is to have FUN!! And truly learn from each other by sharing our experiences as immigrants or simply as travelers through different cultures and the misunderstandings, some funny, some embarrassing that we have all suffered when trying to make sense of some new words or new worlds!

We will conduct interviews with our members, not only to know each other better and have a good sense of our craft and passions, but also to make them known to the general audience of the "blogosphere" to promote our craft. 

We will also be publishing tips and tutorials about a variety of things of interest to our members, including different craft techniques, sources for materials, how-to articles on photography for example, which is a good part of our marketing image if you pardon the pun.

So, let's get together and have some fun! Sí se puede!
